Surgical Treatment of Cataracts

The primary and radical method for treating cataracts is the surgical removal of the clouded lens and its replacement with an artificial intraocular lens. 1 By replacing the natural lens with an artificial one, vision is fully restored. 2 The artificial lens does not become cloudy and is implanted permanently

A cataract is the partial or complete clouding of the lens, which leads to a decrease in visual acuity.

The causes include:

  • Age-related changes
  • The influence of external or internal adverse factors
  • Eye injuries
  • Various chronic diseases (diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.)
  • Abnormal functioning of the body's immune system​
  • Prolonged use of hormonal medications
  • Stress
  • Hereditary predisposition

The symptoms include:

  • Double vision of objects and images
  • Decreased clarity of images
  • Color perception impairment
  • Reduction in visual acuity that may or may not be corrected with glasses
  • Difficulty with near vision tasks, especially when working with small details.
Surgical Interventions

Glaucoma Treatment

There are several types of glaucoma, the most common of which is open-angle glaucoma.

There are several treatment options for open-angle glaucoma:

  • Medication (drugs that suppress the production of intraocular fluid or improve its outflow through the anterior chamber angle)
  • Laser treatment (e.g., laser trabeculoplasty)
  • Surgical treatment (installation of various shunts or sinustrabeculectomy)

At the Lavanda Ophthalmological Center, glaucoma treatment is performed using the selective laser trabeculoplasty method. This technique improves the outflow of intraocular fluid through the trabecular system located in the angle of the anterior chamber.

The procedure is performed very quickly (in 2–5 minutes) and is highly effective, reducing intraocular pressure by up to 30%. This makes it a viable first-line treatment, eliminating the need for constant use of eye drops, or in some cases, reducing the number and/or frequency of their use. As a result, the patient’s quality of life can be significantly improved.
